At the beginning of November 2011, South Africa will celebrate a remarkable achievement in that this will be the start of the 11th year of WESSA's Blue Flag programme in South Africa .
Many South Africans are counting the days to their annual summer holiday. For those lucky ones, holidays are synonymous with beaches and fun in the sun. All 27 Blue Flag beaches are ready for the holiday season.

MINISTER ANNOUNCES 27 SOUTH AFRICAN BLUE FLAG BEACHES
South Africa can proudly celebrate ten years of the Blue Flag programme in the country this year with 27 beaches being awarded Blue Flag status for 2010/2011, Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk, the Minister of Tourism, said today.
Beautiful Mossel Bay hosted the 2010 Blue Flag National Launch on Thursday 28 October 2010. The event, held on Santos beach, brought together representatives from all the municipalities participating in the programme. It was great to welcome (back) our Tourism Minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk who was the guest speaker, and Sophie Bachet from FEE in Denmark.
Today’s the DAY the World Cup Soccer starts in South Africa!!!! And if one’s eyes start to go “googley” with all the television watching, head to the beach. Yes, even though it is the winter, some municipalities have “gone the extra mile” and have put in place an extra Blue Flag season for the duration of the World Cup.
