Witsand beach, at the mouth of the Breeded River

Witsand is new to the Blue Flag programme and joins Blue Flag in December 2010. This beach has been a well-kept secret for many years and many holiday-makers have spent excellent beach holidays in this very undeveloped area of the South African coastline. The beach is extremely wide, very sandy and offers excellent space for beach walks. Be warned, the wind can get up in the late morning and make the beach quite unpleasant especially in the early summer. But it is certainly a beach to visit. Outside of Blue Flag season, Witsand is also an excellent whale-watching site.

The beach infrastructure has been upgraded to meet Blue Flag standards. There is lots of parking, benches to sit on and enjoy the view, and a restaurant right on the beach. The Breede River (the wide river) is one of the Western Cape's widest rivers and offers lots of opportunities for boating, walking, exploring. And the beautiful Breede River Lodge is just a short way from the beach.

Access to the beach is via the N2 road from either Cape Town or from Mossel Bay . The nearest town is Heidelberg on the road from Cape Town to Mossel Bay . When driving from Cape Town , just before one reaches the town of Heidelberg , one takes the R322 route to the coast (turn right off the N2 road) and head in the direction of Witsand/Infanta.
